Costco doubles down on prioritizing DEI above its members
While other major corporations have sensibly reversed their woke Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) policies, Costco has been outspoken about refusing to do the same.
Costco’s intense commitment to DEI caused 19 state Attorneys General to take aim at its leadership. In a letter to Costco leadership, the AGs asked the company to reevaluate its stance on DEI and drop the policies, as it may impact its compliance with state and federal laws.
Costco’s commitment to prioritizing DEI over its consumers was most evident before its January 2025 shareholder meeting, when Costco’s Board of Directors unanimously opposed assessing the possible risks that DEI could have on the company’s stock.

Chief Diversity Officer (CDO) Alison Francis touted DEI drives Costco’s legacy, declaring “diversity is our sustainability. That’s how we’re going to make sure that our company continues to drive its legacy.”

In her capacity as CDO of Costco, Francis is a member of the Washington Employers for Racial Equality (WERE). Members of WERE commit to a long list of goals to “drive racial equity in the workplace,” including racist hiring practices that include prioritizing people who are black above those of other races for senior leadership roles.
In her official capacity, Francis also participated in a WERE event to discuss “Costco’s efforts to advance racial equity through internship access, their partnership with United Negro College Fund, and how fellow member companies can engage in equitable internship programs.”

Costco maintains an “Inclusive Community Department” which focuses on DEI employment goals as well as a “supplier inclusion department” where the company prioritizes “diverse” vendors. Going even further, Costco intensely monitors how “diverse” its employees are and releases yearly stats on their genders and races.

Costco’s DEI absurdity doesn’t stop there. Francis revealed that Costco executives took a formal trip to the Equal Justice Initiative Legacy Museum, a woke gallery equating past enslavement of black Americans to current incarceration rates.

The company states that, “Costco’s mission is to continually provide our members with quality goods and services at the lowest possible prices.” But its embrace of racial discrimination has nothing to with that mission, and may even serve as an impediment to it.
