Consumers’ Research’s “Even Just Standing is Good For You,” described two new studies that demonstrate the benefits of standing as well as concerns surrounding sedentary lifestyles (read here). This week, innovators introduce the Hamster Wheel Standing Desk- yes, it’s exactly as it sounds. A new invention meant to keep one productive and fit at the workplace, the product is essentially a stationary desk with a human-size wheel around it. Rob Godshaw, one of the creators, states,
Numerous esteemed experts agree that standing is better than sitting and that walking is better than standing… Despite this, your workplace only provides inhumane chairs and stagnant standing desks for you to use while you struggle to get through a workday full of distractions and bodily pains.”
The piece is a collaboration between Godshaw, artist-in-residence at Autodesk’s Pier 9 in San Francisco, and Will Doenlen, a developer at Instructables. The desk was meticulously complete in 24 hours. A Youtube instructional video is available to consumers who want to build their own. In the meantime, the invention seems like an efficient way to hit two birds with one stone (the birds being workplace productivity and activity levels). Should the design be mass produced, it has the potential to reduce the growing inactivity of daily life.
