WhatsApp celebrated its seventh anniversary recently, and to commemorate the occasion published a blog post on February 26 in which they announced they would no longer support a number of mobile devices, by the end of 2016.
Blackberry was one of the more prominent devices in the announcement (all Blackberry phones will see the axe, even the relatively recent Blackberry 10), but WhatsApp will also stop supporting the Nokia S40 and Symbian S60, Android 2.1 and 2.2, and Windows Phone 7.1. More recent versions of those phone will still be supported.
WhatsApp explained their decision in a statement: “While these mobile devices have been an important part of our story, they don’t offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app’s features in the future.”
