Tesla unveiled its first solar product on October 28 – solar powered roof tiles that appear identical to traditional shingles. The top layer is textured glass that allows light to penetrate to solar cells installed below. The current prototypes are claimed to reduce reduce solar cell efficiency by only two percent.
SolarCity, a rooftop solar panel installer, stated
The solar roof will be priced to cost less than an equivalent roof type when projected utility bill savings are factored in.
Although this product is dependent upon Tesla successfully acquiring SolarCity, these new solar tiles could serve as a complement to Tesla’s other products, notably the Powerwall home battery and car charging station.
