Mastercard has announced that it is testing facial recognition technology as a method of verifying online purchases. A user will hold his or her phone up to face level, then blink to confirm that he or she is human and not merely a still image. The payment processing company believes this will appeal to the younger generation it is “into selfies.”
However, some security experts are skeptical of the security of this system, given the troubles Google and other companies have had with similar technologies in the past.
People took photographs and animated them, drawing eyelids on. There have been advances in biometrics since then, but they’re not quite there yet,
said Pen Test Partners security researcher Ken Munro.
