Tap-to-pay options are coming to AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon customers as the three mobile providers strike a deal to bring Google Wallet to their services. As part of the deal, Google Wallet will also purchase the service providers’ software Softcard to bring tap-to-pay functionality to the Android phones.
The move comes as the services attempt to keep up with Apple’s tap and pay functions. The three providers had previously rejected plans to install Google Wallet, with the tap-to-pay functions, into their devices. At the time, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon were developing their own tap-to-pay functions. The companies gained the impetus to work together following the widespread popularity of Apple Pay.
