A new study carried out at the University of Colorado has found that those who drank diet soda while dieting lost more weight than those who drank just water. The study, funded by the American Beverage Association, points out that those who are dieting often have an easier time losing weight if they do not give up something they enjoy, such as soda. Therefore, it appears that the results of the study show a correlation rather than causation—drinking diet soda itself does not appear to directly lead to weight loss. Instead, what the study shows is that not giving up soda, but instead switching to drinking diet versions of the same beverage while cutting out sugar heavy items, may allow for those trying to lose weight to maintain the will-power they need to accomplish their short-term goals and eventually lessen their overall intake of sugar heavy items including soda.
