Bitcoin Now Accepted in Movie Theaters

Movie-goers can now buy movie tickets with bitcoin at over 900 theaters in the U.S. In a move that studio execs call “cutting edge,” Open Road Films has partnered with MovieTickets.com and GoCoin to accept bitcoin as payment when purchasing movie tickets to the highly anticipated comedy Dope, opening everywhere Friday, June 19, 2015.

The promotion was inspired by the hit indie film that exceled at Sundance. Dope follows a trio of geeky, ‘90s hip hop obsessed high school friends as they navigate the tricky waters of high school in an inner city neighborhood. As the film’s protagonists use the digital currency to profit from illicit online ecstasy sales, bitcoin plays a notable role in the film itself.

In a press release, Open Road Film’s Chief Marketing Officer Jason Cassidy said,

Dope is fresh, innovative and cutting edge. This partnership reflects all of those qualities of the movie. Bitcoin is an integral part of Dope and we could not be more excited to bring this unique new opportunity to moviegoers.”

GoCoin will provide consumers the option to purchase movie tickets with bitcoin at 985 of the approximated 2000 theaters across the U.S. where Dope will be playing. Movie-goers who select the bitcoin payment option experience a simpler checkout experience in which they do not have to enter all of the information required with credit cards.

MovieTickets.com is currently one of the largest movie ticket purchasing platforms in the U.S. CEO Joel Cohen suggested that the company sees potential in enabling this technology in more of its offerings, adding,

Our intention is to keep the option available beyond the film’s theatrical run for other films to benefit from. The more payment options we offer, the broader our customer base becomes.”
