A Bright Future: Employment in Solar Energy Growing

Recently, the National Solar Job Census released by The Solar Foundation reports on the striking growth of employment in the solar Industry. The study claims that “One out of every 50 new jobs added in the United States in 2016 was created by the solar industry, representing 2 percent of all new jobs.” Of all the segments of the energy sector, solar is the second largest employer, second after the oil industry.

Experts are attributing this rise to several factors, but the largest is the falling cost of solar PV panel production. Between 2010 and 2015 the cost of production has fallen close to 72 percent.

This trend may be indicative of the growth of this industry, and according to Liz Delaney, the program director at EDF Climate Corps “Our findings would lead us to believe that the right place to invest dollars are in renewable energy rather than fossil fuels.” Some analysts predict that renewable energy will continue to grow with or without federal government subsidies.
