The most recent episode the hit animated series South Park caused an unusual surprise for viewers who own an Amazon Echo device.
The Echo’s AI platform is called “Alexa,” and fans found their shopping carts full of profanity and their alarms set to 7:00 am, after the Eric Cartman character repeatedly interacted with his Echo device on the show. Many viewers simply unplugged or turned their devices off within the first few minutes of the episode.
This is probably not what Amazon developers had in mind when developing the device. Amazon Echo owners everywhere will have to wait to see if the rest of the season’s episodes contain similar Alexa shenanigans.
This episode is reminiscent of the spring 2017 incident in which a Burger King ad hilariously – and frustratingly – sparked Google Home devices. In that ad, a Burger King employee would say, “OK Google, what is the Whopper burger?” Apparently, this caused Google Home devices to begin reading off the Wikipedia entry for the Whopper.
